If you're trying to grow your hair longer and aren't seeing results, one haircare expert shared you're probably doing things wrong in your routine.

Finding the perfect hair care for you can be a tough process, as there are so many products on the market which claim to help growth, and so much conflicting advice that it can be exhausting to work it out for yourself with trial and error.

But Amber Pot, who is "obsessed with haircare", shared some "hair growth don'ts" with her followers, urging them to heed her advice as she flaunted her waist-length hair at the end of the clip.

Amber warned you may well be washing your hair "too often". While advice can be conflicting about this, Amber said if you strip your hair "of its natural oils", then it will struggle to reach its growth potential.

According to a hairdresser on Quora, you should "wash your hair once every three days for maximum growth. Your hair needs natural oils for maximum growth, and too much shampoo can dry it out. Use dry shampoo in between washes if your hair is naturally oily.

Someone on Reddit also warned shampooing your hair too often could cause "dehydration" and "breakage", so it would seem as though your hair would grow slower if that happened.

Next, Amber said if "you trim it too often", you may not see the results you want, as you're directly cutting length off your locks. Some experts say, however, you'll be left with "healthier hair" if you trim it regularly - so it depends what your goals are.

Amber said if you condition the roots and shampoo the ends, then this is a big no-no for the best-looking hair. According to the experts at Lethal Looks Salon, you should "shampoo your roots and condition your ends" instead.

But why? Lathering your whole hair in shampoo is a "waste of product", and "is damaging to the mid-shaft and ends of your hair".

"When you rinse, the shampoo runs through your ends, which is plenty of cleansing," they shared, saying you should apply conditioner "to your mid-shaft through your ends".

Amber shared "if you brush [your hair] aggressively when it's wet", this could stop growth and cause breakage. Your hair is most vulnerable to breakage when it's wet, as the cuticle is open, making it weaker. Therefore, if you aggressively brush it when it isn't dry, you're more likely to damage it, which can potentially put a stop to your long hair dreams.

Finally, if you "don't oil your scalp weekly," Amber reckons you may not be seeing the long hair results you want to. According to Healthline, oiling hair regularly reduces hygral fatigue , or the swelling and drying of hair. Oils protect the follicle from surfactants by filling the gap between cuticle cells.

It's important to note everybody's hair journey is different, and genetics, diet, and external factors also play a direct part in hair growth.
