'I'm a health expert - you need to try TikTok's viral cucumber salad recipe'
From butter boards to fluffy coke, TikTok is full of bizarre food and drink trends, with often questionable nutritional value. However, the latest viral food trend to hit the social media platform has been given the thumbs up by health experts.
For those who somehow haven't seen it on their FYP yet, the viral cucumber salad was first created by Logan Moffitt, also known as @logagm or Cucumber Guy, earlier this summer. Since then, his cucumber-based recipes have sent TikTok users wild, with variations featuring everything from salmon and steak to "MSG, obviously".
The health experts at Landys Chemist are fans of the viral salad, highlighting its many health benefits, such as being "helpful in aiding weight loss". They also said it "aids digestion, making it the perfect in-between meal snack", adding that the salad "contributes to better skin and a glowy complexion", while also helping to "regulate blood pressure".
As if that wasn't reason enough to give the trend a go, they explained how the salad helps promote "hydration and detoxification throughout the body".
Cucumber Guy always starts by slicing his cucumber on a mandolin straight into a large plastic container, adding the other ingredients to the tub later, before shaking everything together. His "original best way to eat an entire cucumber" remains one of his most viral recipes, racking up millions of views and hundreds of thousands of likes.
The delectable recipe features a mix of soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, MSG, sesame oil, garlic, spring onion, and sesame seeds along with a full sliced cucumber, reports the Daily Record.
Logan usually keeps the specific quantities of ingredients under wraps, however, which makes recreating his dishes a bit of a challenge. However, for culinary explorers eager to try their hand at this popular dish, Rhysa Phommachanh, health expert at Landys Chemist, has provided an easy alternative.
Here's how to make your own cucumber salad, using some cupboard staples.
Firstly, you want to chop your cucumbers into bite-size pieces (you can create the fancy spirals seen on TikTok, or slices are fine!) and add these to a bowl or Tupperware.
Toss in some salt to help drain excess moisture. Allow the cucumbers to sit for five minutes (five minutes is fine, you don’t want to remove too much of the cucumber’s natural water).
Pat dry, and toss in some garlic, spring onion and any other toppings you like.
Add one tsp of chilli flakes along with one tsp of sugar, and toss together.
Add one tsp of rice vinegar and one tbsp of sesame oil.
Mix well, and enjoy.
