A new trend called “mouth taping” is sweeping TikTok, often used as part of the wider “morning shed” technique that is taking the skincare world by storm.

The idea behind this trend is simple: apply the products and methods at night, giving them plenty of time to work for a fresh face and minimal effort in the the morning. According to Abi Olek, advanced facialist and holistic aesthetician at BEAUSKIN, the "morning shed" trend champions a multi-layered skincare approach, prioritising nourishment and repair.

The skincare expert recommends several methods that could help you wake up feeling brand new, including the viral trend known as 'mouth taping.'

Using dedicated tape to keep the mouth closed at night, the method is not without it's controversy.

What is mouth taping?

Originally championed by actress and celebrity wellness guru, Gwyneth Paltrow, lip tape is said to have many benefits, including stopping snoring, providing a deeper sleep to combat fatigue, boosting concentration, banishing bad morning breath and keeping you hydrated at night.

Abi said: "Mouth tape is thought to be beneficial for mouth breathers, encouraging nasal breathing which can improve overall hydration."

Increased hydration combined with a solid nights sleep can help skin to regenerate skin cills for a fresher, less puffy feel.

According to the Sleep Foundation, very few studies of mouth taping have been done, but one small study found that participants reported less daytime sleepiness, less snoring and fewer breathing disruptions while sleeping with a soft patch over their mouths.

Other 'morning shed' routines that Abi thinks are worth the effort, include

Overnight sheet masks

Popping a face mask on before you go to bed can help to improve the appearance of the skin.

Abi said: "Ideal for an intensive hydration boost, these masks provide a moisture barrier that locks into the skin overnight."

According to the expert, these patches effectively smooth and soften fine lines, targeting areas prone to aging.

Silk bonnets

Help to eradicate bad hairs days forever with this one simple trick.

Abi said: "Silk bonnets help protect hair from friction, minimizing frizz and promoting smoother, healthier hair."

Heatless curlers

Another popular trend on TikTok, heatless curlers are both affordable and effective.

The expert said: "For those wanting curls without heat damage, these curlers allow you to achieve beautiful waves while you sleep."

Jawline straps

A favourite among beauty enthusiasts, these straps offer a temporary lifting effect, especially when combined with a skin-tightening cream for special occasions.

Whatever ways you choose to enhance the way you look and feel overnight, this focus on evening rituals allows the skin to rejuvenate overnight, leaving you with radiant, healthy skin by daybreak

Abi explained: "known as the ‘ugly-to-bed, pretty-to-wake’ method, it encourages a dedicated nighttime routine that helps reveal glowing skin by morning."

The "morning shed" trend on TikTok has over 30 million posts, some users have raised concerns about the potential impact on sleep quality.

Abi advises caution when approaching skincare trends. She said: “It’s essential to tailor trends to your skin type and individual needs. Consulting certified skincare professionals who understand ingredient interactions can provide personalized advice.

"Just because someone on TikTok suggests a skincare routine doesn’t mean they’re qualified or that they’ve undergone extensive training.”

Martin Seeley of MattressNextDay also added his thoughts on the matter: “So long as you are using lightweight, breathable products, the quality of your sleep shouldn’t be impacted too much.

"As with anything new, sleeping with facial products may take some adjustment, but over time your body will adapt. If after a week you feel that your sleep is affected, it’s fine to scale back on products until you find a comfortable balance.”
