Improve gut health and 'ease cold symptoms' by eating two foods, health expert says
A health expert has revealed that eating more of two foods could help people improve their gut health and ward off illnesses this winter.
With cold and flu season still very much underway, complaints of sore throats, runny noses and persistent coughs seem to be everywhere. But while catching a cold can sometimes feel inevitable, there are some steps you can take to boost your immune system and minimise the symptoms of anything you do happen to catch.
Rhysa Phommachanh, a health specialist at Landys Chemist, has named the two foods you should eat more of this winter. The expert said: “Both garlic and honey have proven benefits all year round, but can especially support our health in winter.

"Garlic is rich in prebiotic insulin fibre, which supports gut health and is believed to have antimicrobial and antiviral properties to fight disease and ease cold symptoms. Honey, high in antioxidants like flavonoids and polyphenols, helps balance the immune system and ward off illnesses."
Garlic and honey aren't the only foods you should aim to eat more of in the winter months. Nutrition experts from Ski Famille also recommend adding spinach and citrus fruits to your diet if you want to boost your body’s immune system naturally.
Spinach is loaded with antioxidants, vitamin C and beta carotene, which can increase the infection-fighting capacity of our immune systems. By lightly cooking spinach, you allow the vegetable retain its nutrients while also making it easier to absorb.
Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes can also help fight colds and other bugs.
Sophia Moore, a nutritionist from Ski Famille, said: "Your immune system is your body’s best line of defence, and supporting it through nutrition is not only effective but sustainable. Simple changes, like integrating more of these powerful foods into your meals, can help your body stay strong and resilient throughout the year.”
