Bad news, Inbetweeners fans. Our favourite teenage hell-raisers are officially retired.

The E4 comedy maintains a huge cult following for its tiny total of 18 episodes and two massively successful movie spinoffs, but don't bet on a Netflix revival anytime soon.

"I can confirm The Inbetweeners is over," star Simon Bird has sadly told The Guardian.

Bird stressed that The Inbetweeners didn't need ten series to tell its story, as most hit US comedies like The Big Bang Theory or Friends have in the past.

"I feel that happens a lot with British comedies," he added. "They're short-lived but make a big impression. We're used to American comedies where you blink and suddenly there's been 150 episodes of The Big Bang Theory but it's a different system here.

"There's no writers' rooms. Sitcoms tend to be very authored, the visions of their creators, who write every word. It's difficult to write one episode, so to write 18 is a superhuman feat.

"To fans, it feels like there's more because they've gone back and watched them so many times, which is humbling."

The demise of the original Inbetweeners is a classic good news/bad news scenario. Production company Banijay UK recently said it was considering reviving the franchise, but as a total reboot with a new teenage cast.

Executive Peter Langenberg revealed: "It's not feasible for the cast to reprise their roles at that stage of life, but the brand is so strong that I'm definitely interested in seeing if we could take a new spin on it."

Hopefully we will be seeing Simon Bird back in cinemas soon. He's currently working with his wife Lisa Owens on turning a "tale of single parenting and heavy metal" into a comedy film.
