'Incredible Bravery': Cops Guide Boat to Safety During Storm Surge
Police officers in Sarasota, Florida, were applauded for their “incredible bravery” responding to a distress call from a sailboat during Hurricane Helene’s storm surge on Thursday, September 26.
Three officers from Sarasota Police Department’s Marine Unit were called to help a sailboat in trouble near the Centennial Park and 10th Street boat ramp about 9pm on Thursday night.
“The storm’s fierce winds and rising waters made it nearly impossible to safely assist, but these officers didn’t hesitate to jump into action,” the department said.
Bodycam footage from the night shows the officers trying to anchor the sailboat as it rocks in the storm.
“[They] demonstrated incredible bravery and dedication. Their swift actions and unwavering resolve helped prevent a disaster, saving lives and securing equipment at great personal risk. We are incredibly proud of their courage and professionalism,” the department said. Credit: Sarasota Police Department via Storyful
