Having breakfast out feels like a real treat to me. However, sometimes when you wake up with a pounding headache after a late night out, it is what you need.

And a couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to go to a place in Bath I would drive from Bristol for. As I get to know this nearby city, my friends who live in Bath suggested we wandered down to the city centre for breakfast.

Having eaten there once before, they decided to take me to the Good Day Cafe on Upper Borough Walls - which is rated best coffee and tea shop in Bath on TripAdvisor. A bit like The Bristolian in Montpelier or the Crafty Egg down on Stokes Croft, this place also had a queue outside when we got there at about 11am.

However, this moved fairly quickly and within 10 or 15 minutes we were sat on an outside table in a crisp autumnal day. Waking up in a sweet mood, I decided to go for the Sticky Toffee Pudding French toast (£11.25).

I love Sticky Toffee Pudding, and I also love French toast so I was very excited to try a combination of the two. The generous breakfast consisted of two thick slices of toast which were covered in a delicious toffee sauce.

The ginger and caramelised biscuit crumb was like nothing I had eaten before, with the ginger bringing a slight sharpness to this sweet breakfast, while the clotted cream was the perfect addition. Going for savoury options, my friends went for the loaded hash browns - which they had tried before.

With different options available, one went for the butter baked garlic mushrooms with sliced avocado, Sriracha mayo and toasted pumpkin seeds (£12). "You can't go wrong with hot mayo", she said, adding that the pumpkin seeds add a nice crunch.

We also ordered the pork cheek ragu, with goat's cheese, red wine jus and vegetable crisp (£12). It was a stunning breakfast so, if you ever find yourself in Bath at breakfast time, check it out.

And, if not, drive from Bristol for some breakfast yumminess like I did - it's well worth the trip.

Good Day Cafe is on 12 Upper Borough Walls, Bath city centre.
