Incredible Moment Whale Lunge Feeds Close to Long Island Shore
A humpback whale delighted onlookers by lunge feeding close to the shore at Little Plains Beach in Southhampton, New York, on Tuesday, August 6.
Joanna Steidle said she captured this footage on Tuesday morning and was in “complete awe” seeing the whale lunge out of the water.
“I watched and followed her feeding on large schools of menhaden aka bunker fish with my drone,” she told Storyful.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, humpback whales spend most of their time during warmer months feeding and building up fat stores for winter. The whales use several techniques to help herd, corral, and disorient prey. Once the prey is corralled, they are pushed toward the surface and engulfed as the whale lunges upward.
