Incredible street art tribute to Karl Lagerfeld by mural artist Pegasus pops up in London hours after his death

An incredible new mural paying tribute to iconic fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has popped up in London after his death.

Mural artist Pegasus “dropped everything” when he heard Lagerfeld had died on Tuesday to head to his studio and design the piece that is now painted on a wall on Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch.

“I know he's quite a controversial figure but when I heard that he passed last night, I was actually heading to Belfast and I just kind of dropped everything and ran to my studio,” Pegasus told the Standard.

“When someone like that dies you have to drop everything and pay tribute to them.”

The mostly black and white mural is a portrait of the 85-year-old designer who up until his death was the creative director of Fendi, Chanel and his eponymous label.

The German born fashion “Kaiser” - known for his trademark look of dark sunglasses, high collars and white ponytail - died after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

The mural is bordered with one of his famous lines: “There is no beauty without strangeness.”

Pegasus said he worked from noon, when he heard the news, until 2am on Wednesday, returning to the studio at 8am to finish the piece.

He said that personally the news “shocked” him because Lagerfeld seemed like a “superhuman” figure.

“There's several people that have passed away and I've just been in total disbelief about," he said.

“Michael Jackson was one of them because I thought I'd never see the day that he died, he didn't even seem human, he was like superhuman and Karl Lagerfield was one of those types of people.”

He added that despite being a controversial figure he has always looked to the designer as a trend setter.

“Everything else (apart from Lagerfeld’s fur collections) I absolutely adored, I thought he was a genius and just such an icon.”

Pegasus is known for striking murals of celebrities such as Madonna and Amy Winehouse that feature around London.
