A vandalised building left empty for three years could be brought back into use by an independent school. The Aspley Centre, located in Melbourne Park, Aspley, was formerly a YMCA youth centre.

The community centre previously provided sports activities, childcare and room hire for events, but YMCA chose not to renew the lease. A previous statement on their website said this was due to an “unsustainable increase in the council’s rent expectations”.

The building has been left vacant in recent years and “is being vandalised regularly” according to Nottingham City Council documents. The council published a decision on Monday (September 23) saying they plan to grant a new 25-year lease to FUEL Independent School.

A report on the issue says: “This property will be used as a community building for children and families, adult education and training workshops.” The school will work with young people who have been permanently excluded from their mainstream schools or are on the verge of permanent exclusion.

The school’s support extends to those aged 16 and above with education, employment, apprenticeships and training through personalised plans. Young people with Special Educational Needs, who access FUEL’s services and are in key stages 3 and 4, are provided with support packages tailored to their needs.

A council document notes the school wishes to repair and refurbish the building if it were to occupy it. letting the building out will help reduce antisocial behaviour in the area and leaving the site vacant would mean the council would not receive any revenue.

While the council has approved the decision, it is subject to further scrutiny from senior councillors, but will go through if not opposed. FUEL Independent School were contacted for comment but did not respond.
