Indonesia's Krakatau Volcano Spits Lava Bombs and Boulders in Spectacular Eruption

Molten lava and boulders rained down from the sides of Anak Krakatau – dubbed the “child” of the legendary Indonesian volcano – on July 18.

A tour group from Aventure et Volcans were on hand to witness the spectacular eruption, with Guy De Saint Cyr and Daniel Brazillier capturing video of the moment. The footage shows plumes of steam and ash emerging from the crater on Anak Krakatau, and rock and lava being violently ejected. Rocks could be seen splashing down near the tour boat in the waters of the Sunda Strait which divides the islands of Java and Sumatra.

Anak Krakatau emerged from the sea around half a century after its “parent” Krakatau erupted in 1883, killing tens of thousands of people in one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history. Credit: Guy De Saint Cyr and Daniel Brazillier via Storyful
