Inflation has climbed more sharply than expected to 2.3%, its highest level since September 2013, official figures show.

The figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed food prices were rising again after 31 months in a row of year-on-year deflation.

Higher petrol prices were largely responsible for the increase in the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) measure of inflation last month, up from 1.8% in January.

Economists had expected CPI inflation of 2.1% for February.
