'This Is Insane': Shoppers Line Down Street Outside Melbourne Supermarket

Long lines of shoppers formed outside supermarkets in Australia on the morning of March 23 after the government announced the closure of non-essential businesses from midday.

On Sunday, March 22, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a national shutdown of non-essential services in a bid to slow the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

Venues such as pubs, gyms and churches would close by midday on the Monday, however supermarkets would remain open.

In this video, a line can be seen stretching along Franklin Street in Melbourne’s city centre outside an Aldi outlet on the Monday. “This is insane,” a voice can be heard saying in the background. Other supermarket outlets in major Australian cities were also inundated with shoppers.

There had been 1,098 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across Australia by the morning of 22 March, according to the Department of Health. Credit: Eloiseseven via Storyful
