Inside Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx's split: Who called it off between them?

More information has surfaced around what led to Katie Holmes' unexpected split from Jamie Foxx after six years of dating.

Multiple reports surfaced on Monday confirming their breakup and, while neither actor's rep has responded to requests for comment, Us Weekly now reports that it was Holmes who called off the relationship earlier this summer.

"They never had a typical relationship," an insider told ET. "They have always been incredibly independent and their lives didn't revolve around each other. They lived separately and in different cities and saw each other occasionally."

"They are just both caught up with their own families, careers and obligations that their relationship had to take a back seat," the source added.

Indeed, insiders explained to Us Weekly earlier this year that they "live a very private lifestyle" and didn't want their relationship to ever "disrupt either of their families."

While Holmes has a 13-year-old daughter, Suri, who she had with ex-husband Tom Cruise (though he has reportedly not spent time with Suri in years), Foxx is the father of two daughters, Corinne, 25, and Annalise, 10.

"Jamie rarely has her over his house and they mostly hang out separately from their kids," a source said in April. "Katie and Jamie have great chemistry and a romantic relationship. [They are also] close friends."

That being said, Corinne definitely spent some time with Holmes. In the days following her father's last public sighting with his now-ex-girlfriend at the Met Gala on May 6, which was their first official public appearance together, Foxx's oldest child spoke out about their relationship for the first time ever.

"They are so great and Katie is always so chic," Corinne told People Now. "They were wonderful. [It was] my dad's first Met Gala. I actually felt cool because I went to the Met Gala before him."

"They're really good, really great," she added of their romance.

On Monday night, Foxx shared his first post on Instagram since news of his split became public, posing alongside his two daughters backstage at his Fox show, "Beat Shazam."

"We’ve had an incredible season, seen so many lives changed, heard amazing stories and had a blast!!!" he captioned the cute photo. "Thank you to all u THE FANS for tuning in!!!!"

His post follows speculation that he's already moved on from Holmes after being spotted out with two different women in the last week: First, he was seen with an unidentified blonde at West Hollywood hot spot, Delilah, on Thursday, August 15; second, he was spotted leaving Bootsy Bellows nightclub in the same neighborhood two nights later with young singer Sela Vave.

While a source told People that Vave is "just a girl he’s helping out, a young singer," that hasn't stopped speculation around the nature of their relationship from mounting. Adding fuel to the fire was a Page Six eyewitness who claims to have overheard Holmes talking about Foxx at La Esquina in New York City recently.

"What Jamie does is his business," she reportedly said. "We haven’t been together for months."
