Powerful thunderstorms caused intense lightning over Washington on Thursday night, July 23, reports said.
The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia, and Washington on Thursday evening, predicting that penny-sized hail could fall in the area.
Reports said the continuous lightning strikes were due to persistent high temperatures and humidity hovering over the Washington area in previous days.
The Nationals versus Yankees game, the first Major League Baseball game of the 2020 season, was called in the sixth inning because of the inclement weather, though the Yankees’ 4-1 victory will stand, MLB said.
