Intense Wind and Rain Batters Fiji as Cyclone Yasa Approaches

Tropical Cyclone Yasa brought gale force winds and driving rain to Fiji on December 17, as the Pacific nation declared a State of Natural Disaster due to the Category 5 storm.

Gale force winds were recorded at around 10 am local time near Rakiraki, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service. The agency issued a hurricane warning for most parts of the island group earlier in the day.

The cyclone was expected to have wind gusts of up to 217 mph at its center, according to the national weather bureau. It was predicted to make landfall over the province of Bua at around 8 pm local time.
