Inter Milan are set to trigger an option to extend Ashley Young’s deal at the San Siro.

The Italians bought Young, 34, from Manchester United in January for £1.3million on an initial six-month contract, with an extra year which they now intend to take up.

It is understood there is a “mutual option” that player and club must decide on but there is a willingness for Inter to keep the former England international.

Serie A clubs have returned to training following the coronavirus pandemic bringing football to a halt and Italy into lockdown. Young’s future at Inter is likely to be confirmed when the conclusion of the 2019/20 is known.

He has started every league game for Antonio Conte since arriving from United. While he has been played at right-back at Old Trafford, Conte has used him in the left wing-back role that he starred in for England when he reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2018.

Conte, the former Chelsea manager, has brought him off the bench in the Europa League but has started Young in the big matches such as the 4-2 win over rivals AC Milan, when he helped them come from two goals down.

Young has been one of the five arrivals at Inter from the Premier League this season, with Conte raiding England for Christian Eriksen and Romelu Lukaku on permanent deals, while Alexis Sanchez and Victor Moses came on loans.

He had six months left on his deal at United, plus the offer of an extension, when Inter Milan made their move in January with a package to tempt him to Italy after 17 years in English football.

His cap against Croatia in the World Cup semi-final was his last appearance for England.
