Well, this is it. The zenith. The mountain's peak. The end of days. The worst mascot in sport. Bravo, Philadelphia Flyers.

It's a crowded field. Gunnersaurus is, arguably, the most well known and, arguably, the least offensive.

At the other end of the scale, we have the likes of West Brom's 'Boiler Man', London 2012 pair 'Wenlock & Mandeville', Stanford University unofficial mascot 'Tree' and Patrick Thistle's melting-Lisa-Simpson take Kingsley.

Philadelphia even have a strong contender already established with MLB outfit Philadelphia Phillies' Phillie Phanatic. Even on gone-but-never-forgotten Hip Hop of NBA's Philadelphia 76s.

But all rivals are now in the rear-window mirror after Gritty was unveiled. A googly-eyed, ginger-furred Muppets reject who loves a belly roll and a fan of jazz hands.

Gritty has made an impact already, racking up over 35,000 Twitter followers within 24 hours of his introduction.

Unfortunately, the Gritty Effect was not felt on the ice as the Flyers went down 4-3 to Boston Bruins in a pre-season game on Tuesday.

The Flyers kick off the new NHL season at Vegas Golden Knights on October 4. The Golden Knights have an interesting mascot themselves with Chance, which we think is a twisted friend of Barney (the dinosaur).
