Investigation launched after body found on County Durham beach

Police have confirmed that they are treating the discovery of a body on a County Durham beach as non-suspicious.

A body was discovered on Hawthorn Hive Beach, close to Easington Colliery, yesterday morning (Thursday, May 23). Durham Police were called out but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has since been identified as a 51-year-old man from Pickering, North Yorkshire. His next of kin have been informed.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called at 10.20am yesterday morning to Easington Colliery (May 23) following concerns for the welfare of a man.

"Sadly, a 51-year-old man from Pickering, North Yorkshire was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
