STORY: :: Residents describe how a human chain in this Polish town created a sandbag wall to fight floods:: September 17, 2024:: Nysa, Poland:: Grzegorz Grochowski, Local resident:: "You can see here the remaining sandbags, overnight people were carrying the sandbags. There was a human chain here, people were passing on sandbags to each other, they were building the wall there. The helicopter was also carrying sand in big bags and they were dropping it to enforce the wall throughout the night until around 4-5 o'clock in the morning." :: September 16, 2024:: National Security Office of Poland (BBN):: Sabina Jakubowska, Local resident:: "Right now it looks calm, the sun is shining, and people are crossing the bridge so we will also try to go back home but water is still there, on our street. The night was hard, we took refuge here in the school building."The mayor of Nysa, a town of over 40,000 residents, had ordered an immediate evacuation on Monday afternoon (September 16) due to damage to a nearby flood bank. The town's hospital began evacuating around midnight, with the most critically ill patients being transported via boats and ambulances.Residents of several areas of Poland and the Czech Republic rushed to evacuate on Monday as others in central Europe began cleaning up after the worst flooding in over two decades left a trail of destruction and a rising number of deaths.Border areas between the Czech Republic and Poland were hit hard over the weekend as heavy rain that has fallen since last week and surging water levels collapsed some bridges, forced evacuations and damaged cars and houses.At least 17 people have died in flooding from Romania to Poland in the past few days.
