Update: Looking for the best iPhone 13 deals? Head over to our iPhone 13 liveblog, where we’re tracking the best contracts and prices.

The iPhone 13 has been revealed and pre-orders opened at 1pm today.

Apple’s newest device launches 24 September, with prices starting from £679. The iPhone 13 looks similar to the iPhone 12, and has a smaller notch in the display, a new camera system and is powered by the company’s latest A15 chip. Apple claims it to be up to 50 per cent faster than its competitors.

There are four new iPhones announced: the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 pro and iPhone pro max. All models feature larger batteries and a more power-efficient chip that offers between 1.5 and 2.5 hours more battery life each day.

There’s a new cinema mode for shooting video using the rear cameras, while the more expensive devices – the iPhones 13 pro and 13 pro max – have a new 3x zoom telephoto lens and an ultra-wide camera that enables macro photography for the first time.

Apple has also emphasised a more eco-conscious approach to the iPhone’s construction. The antenna bands are made from upcycled plastic bottles and the rare earth metals used in the magnets internally are from recycled materials.

How big is the iPhone 13?

Apple has confirmed that the iPhone 13 is the same size as the iPhone 12, though the phone is thicker and heavier than last year’s device. Here’s each model side by side:

  • iPhone 13 mini: 5.4in

  • iPhone 13: 6.1in

  • iPhone 13 pro: 6.1in

  • iPhone 13 pro max: 6.7in

What are the features of the iPhone 13?

  • A smaller notch. The notch at the top of the screen has been reduced in width by 20 per cent. Apple has achieved this by moving the earpiece to the top edge of the phone.

  • 120Hz display. The iPhone 13 pro and iPhone 13 pro max both feature “ProMotion” technology, which allows an adaptive refresh rate for smoother-looking scrolling.

  • Camera improvements. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini both offer huge advancements over last year’s lenses. A new wide-angle lens gathers 47 per cent more light, reducing noise and improving detail. Once exclusive to the top-end iPhone pro max, optical image stabilisation is also now included on the cheaper iPhone 13s.

  • Macro photography. The cameras on the iPhone 13 pro and iPhone 13 pro max can now capture super-detailed close-up shots of tiny objects placed just 2cm from the lens.

  • Ultra-wide and telephoto lenses. The iPhone 13 pro and iPhone 13 pro max both feature a new ultra-wide lens that enhances low-light photography, as well as a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.

  • Cinematic video recording. Similar to portrait mode for stills, cinematic mode can film pets, people and objects with soft focus and automatic enhancements. Focal points can even be adjusted later on in the Photos app.

  • The A15 bionic processor. Apple’s newest chip powers the iPhone 13, enabling better power efficiency, battery life and performance boosts.
