Iranian Demonstrators Crowd Amsterdam's Dam Square

Iranians in Amsterdam gathered in Dam Square on November 19 to voice their support for the anti-government protests that have spread throughout Iran due to rising fuel prices.

The Iranian government announced an increase in gas prices from 10,000 rials (about 0.30 USD) a liter to 15,000 rials (about 0.45 USD) as well as fuel-rationing plans on November 15, sparking the unrest, which quickly snowballed to encompass anger at living costs, according to Iranian state media outlet Press TV and international media.

Protesters have blocked roads and started fires in the days since, and more than 100 people across Iran have died in the resulting government crackdown, the UK-based Amnesty International reported in a November 19 statement that condemned the country’s security forces. Credit: meti_mir via Storyful
