Iranians Cut Hair in Protest Over Death of Woman in Police Custody

Following the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman in the custody of Iran’s morality police, women have taken to social media to post footage of themselves cutting their hair in protest.

According to the UN Human Rights Office, Mahsa Amini, who was arrested on September 13 “for what was perceived to be [an] ‘improper’ hijab,” died three days after she fell into a coma while in custody.

“There are reports Amini was beaten on the head with a baton, and her head was banged against the vehicle by the so-called morality police,” a UN statement read.

According to Iranian media, police said Amini was detained over what she was wearing and have denied any wrongdoing. Police also said she died of a heart attack, according to Iran Press.
