Iraqis Return to Streets a Year on From Mass Protests in Which Hundreds Died

Thousands of Iraqis flocked to Tahrir Square in Baghdad on October 1, a year since the start of mass protests that rocked the country for months and left hundreds dead.

Following the protests that began last October, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi resigned, with his successor, Mustafa Al Kadhimi, pledging to heed protesters’ demands for reform and social justice.

A statement by Kadhimi cited in local press referenced the challenges his government has faced in implementing what he called the protesters’ roadmap. “We were and still are loyal to the Tishreen Movement and its lofty outcomes," he said. “We will achieve our aspiration.” Credit: @ali.zk29 via Storyful
