An Irish Liverpool supporter tragically lost his life after being struck by a car in Milan. The 51-year old fan, was fatally hit by the vehicle as he attempted to cross the A4 highway near Orio al Serio airport in Bergamo, just west of Milan, on Monday night.

The fan, whose identity has not been disclosed, but is from Ireland, is believed to have been trying to reach the NH hotel where he was staying.

According to Il Corriere della Sera, the fan had a ticket for Liverpool's match against AC Milan in his pocket. He managed to cross three lanes of the highway before being hit.

Italian media suggest he was accompanied by two individuals at the time of the incident, thought to be a father and son.

However, when police arrived, the pair had left the scene where the fan was fatally hit. Highway patrol officers are now attempting to identify the father and son who were with the man when he was struck by the vehicle, reports the Mirror.

They wish to question them for failing to provide assistance.

Investigations are underway to determine if he was directed down the hazardous route by an app. It remains unclear why he chose to cross alone, separating himself from other Liverpool fans.

Police are also probing whether the man was in an "altered psychophysical state that may have influenced his actions" at the time of his death.

Liverpool will face A. C. Milan tonight at 8pm in the new format of the UEFA Champions League. The Mirror has reached out to police in Bergamo for comment.
