Irish Nanny Accused Of Killing US Baby Gets Bail

An Irish nanny charged with killing a one-year-old Massachusetts girl in her care two years ago has been granted provisional release on bail of $15,000 (£9,900) as she awaits trial.

If she can pay the bond, Aisling Brady McCarthy will wear a GPS monitoring device and surrender her passport.

The 34-year-old, of Co Cavan, was living illegally in the US and taking care of Rehma Sabir at the family's Cambridge home when the baby died in January 2013.

Federal immigration officials said they would not deport McCarthy if she were kept on a GPS monitor as she would be viewed as still in state custody.

But prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said McCarthy posed a "substantial risk of flight".

The case has been held up as the state medical examiner reviews a finding that Rehma died of traumatic head injuries and that her death was a homicide.

Middlesex Superior Court Judge Maureen Hogan said on Tuesday the trial could start in early July.
