The Island with Bear Grylls is back – and fans have already made their minds up about one camper.

Ben Cooper made quite an impression on those tuning into the Channel 4 launch episode on Sunday (April 23), but unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons.

Within moments of him being on screen, after he proudly declared himself the "alpha male" of the 18-30s group, viewers were slating him on Twitter.

One viewer fumed: "I'll be surprised if the others don't end up eating Ben by the end of the series.. Going to be a good series anyway 😂 #TheIsland @TheIsland."

Another then wrote: "@bencooper0123 @BearGrylls @TheIsland You should not have participated. Every year the show is designed to humiliate masculine men. That's western media for you."

Moments later, a different fan commented: "@TheIsland who is this Ben kid?!?? Shut up pal 👊🏼👊🏼 I would've drowned him before he even reached land. #TheIsland @Channel4."

Another posted: "66 year old Frank killing it on #TheIsland - Ben not so much! Killing the buzz more like! @TheIsland."

But despite the barrage of negative tweets, Ben didn't seem too bothered.

In fact, after the show finished, he took to Instagram to praise his own performance along with a video of himself in action.

He captioned the clip: "Everyone hating on twitter but who started the fire who fed the family no we was a team and done everything as one.... it's all love for the 18-30s ...#theisland #beargrylls @jt_jordanturner @kaggylouise @freddie_g_wilson @richiecarr @crocodile_scissor_cut."

In case anyone was still left in any doubt as to how Ben viewed himself, the 29-year-old electrician then compared himself to Jesus Christ.

Awks...

Over in the 31+ camp, 66-year-old businessman Frank Rothwell also seemed to irritate viewers.

While he clearly had good intentions, he managed to get on the wrong side of everyone by ditching his group to complete tasks by himself, perhaps in a bid to outshine everyone else. But his plan didn't quite work out.

At one point, when Frank tried to prove himself by attempting to cross from one side of the island to another, disaster struck and his team mates were tasked with the difficulty of having to rescue him.

Will the likes of Frank and Ben be able to make amends in episode two?

The Island with Bear Grylls returns to Channel 4 tonight at 9pm.
