With Blue Monday upon us many people will be looking to chase away the January sadness by booking a sunny holiday abroad.

Falling on the third Monday of the month, Blue Monday is reportedly the most depressing day of the year. The term was coined 20 years ago by a travel firm promoting holidays, although its accuracy has since been disputed

Even if you’re not feeling particularly sad today, January’s chilly weather may have you longing for a hot, sunny getaway.

The Canary Islands are popular with Brits all year around but for good reason. Temperatures rarely drop below 20C and thanks to their location off the coast of North Africa, they enjoy year-round sunshine and warm winters.

Offering gorgeous beaches, bustling resorts and breathtaking natural beauty, Tenerife is one of the most popular of the Spanish islands.

Tik Tok user @thegingerabroad recently shared a video of her trip to the island, which amassed more than 240,000 views on the social media site and 10,000 likes. Sharing footage of a sunny day at her hotel with the date January 11 2025, she captioned it: “25C right now and feels like the middle of summer. Best January sun destination!”

Temperatures in Tenerife are usually in the low 20s in January, but can reach as high as the mid 20s, while the southern side of the island is the warmest. But it can get chilly on an evening, so it’s worth bringing a few extra layers with you.

Skyscanner currently shows flights from Manchester Airport to Tenerife in February starting from £22 one way, with returns available for a similar price. You may need to pay extra for seat allocation and baggage.

If you’re after beautiful beaches, the town of Costa Adeje along the south coast has some of the best. For those seeking a bustling resort with a vibrant nightlife, the beachfront destination of Playa de las Americas is a popular choice.

Or explore the rugged landscapes of the north, away from the tourist crowns. In the heart of the island is Mount Teide, Tenerife’s famous volcano which is also a designated dark sky spot, that’s excellent for stargazing.
