Islington murder: Man dies in hospital after being stabbed in north London street

A young man has died in hospital three days after he was stabbed during an "unprovoked attack" in a north London street.

Jonathan McPhillips, 28, was attacked outside the town hall in Islington in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He staggered down Upper Street and collapsed outside a bar shortly after he was stabbed, witnesses said.

Scotland Yard said detectives had launched a murder investigation after the victim died in hospital.

Police said they had been informed of the death on Wednesday.

Police raced to the scene alongside paramedics and doctors from London’s Air Ambulance after being alerted to the stabbing at 12.40am on Saturday.

Medics treated the man as he lay collapsed on the pavement before he was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Mr McPhilips is at least the 10th person to be stabbed to death in the capital this year.

A 17-year-old boy was also taken to an east London hospital with stab wounds. He has since been discharged.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, told the Standard: "Apparently the person was stabbed near the town hall and made their way down Upper Street.

"They then collapsed near the bar and that's where the medical team worked on them."

Part of Upper Street near Highbury Corner was closed off after the attack as police carried out their investigations.

Photos showed forensics officers working on a section of road outside the Be At One bar on Upper Street.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place on March 3.

There have been no arrests and enquiries continue, Scotland Yard said.

Police are appealing to revellers who may have witnessed the stabbing to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams, said: "This was an area of Upper Street which is always busy on a Friday night going into the weekend.

“I am sure there would have been many people present who would have witnessed the altercation between two groups of youths.

“I would urge those people to contact our incident room and tell us what they have seen.

“This seems to be a totally unprovoked attack which has resulted in the death of a young man and left a teenager injured."
