Israeli Forces Strike Gaza for Second Day

Israeli strikes in Gaza were reported for a second day on August 6, hours after the Israel Defense Forces announced the start of “Operation Breaking Dawn” and said they killed a leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in Gaza City.

The IDF announced on Saturday, August 6, that it continued to target PIJ targets in Gaza with helicopter strikes, saying it hit three PIJ military positions on the strip.

Video posted to Twitter by Jason Shawa on Saturday shows smoke rising from behind a building in Gaza.

Shawa told Storyful that the strike hit a residential area near the beach but it was unclear what was struck.

“To my knowledge there is nothing there,” he said, referring to PIJ targets.

The IDF said on Friday that it was carrying out strikes following “direct threats posed by” PIJ, and a number the group’s members were “neutralized” during the initial strikes, and posted footage of other strikes shortly after.

Palestinian health officials said on Saturday that 12 people had been killed, including a 5-year-old girl, and more than 80 others injured. Credit: Jason Shawa via Storyful
