Israeli soldiers shot dead a wheelchair-bound Palestinian protester with no legs on Friday, according to reports.

Ibrahim Abu Thurayeh, 29, was taken to Shifa hospital, in Gaza, after being shot in the head during protests along the eastern border with Israel.

Mail Online reports that another man was also killed nearby in similar circumstances.

The deaths are the latest in an ongoing outbreak of violence prompted by US President Donald Trump's decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

Jerusalem is regarded as a capital by both Israelis and Palestinians, making it the highly combustible centre of the decades-long Israeli-Arab conflict.

Local media reports that Mr Thurayeh lost his legs during the 2014 Gaza war with Israel, but this has not yet been confirmed.

The Israeli military said that about 3,500 Palestinians demonstrated near the Gaza border fence today.

A spokesman for the Israel Defence Force said: "During the violent riots IDF soldiers fired selectively towards the main instigators."

Theresa May said she disagreed with the move and described Mr Trump’s actions as “unhelpful”.
