A private jet believed to be carrying five people on board has crashed and 'erupted in flames' at Istanbul’s main airport.

The jet reportedly crashed after a malfunction while taking off from Ataturk airport on Thursday evening.

Local media in Turkey reported that about four people on board the plane were rushed to hospital.

Police later confirmed the two pilots, a cabin crew member and a passenger were slightly injured in the crash.

Ataturk Airport was closed to traffic as emergency services rushed to the runway where the TC-KON plane crashed.

It is not yet clear what caused the private jet to crash.

Pictures have emerged of the rear end of the jet completely detached from the plane following the incident.

Flights from the airport were briefly suspended and the airport closed, but both runways are now operational.

Last year, about 40 people were killed in a gun and bomb attack at Ataturk airport.
