Those rescued totaled 133 men, 13 women and three children, the coast guard said.
After the rescue operation was completed, the coast guard took to Facebook on November 24 to confirm that three bodies had been found in the water. A further two were washed ashore and discovered by police.
While sharing a video of the rescue operation, Italian transport minister Paola de Micheli commended the coast guard. “[Their] actions make us seriously believe that Italy is still a great country, capable of welcoming and saving lives,” she said. “Proud to represent these discreet and silent heroes.” Credit: Guardia Costiera via Storyful
