ITV Beat The Chasers sparks backlash as fans slam 'ridiculous' question

Beat The Chasers fans have hit out at the ITV game show after a contestant was met with a 'ridiculous' first question during Thursday's (16 January) episode. Several contestants took on the Chasers - Mark Labbett, Shaun Wallace, Anne Hegerty, Paul Sinha, Jenny Ryan and Darragh Ennis - during the programme, with only a few walking away with cash prizes.

However, the third contestant, Ray, appeared to be dealt an unfair hand as he faced the Chasers. His first question read: "In 1894, Queen Victoria bought an oil painting by Daniel Mytens of 'Charles I and Henrietta Maria Departing for...' what?" Host Bradley Walsh exclaimed: "What is that for a first question?!" before reading out the three possible answers; The Chase, The Apprentice and The Twilight Zone.

Ray guessed The Twilight Zone, but Bradley sadly informed him the answer was actually The Chase. The disappointed contestant admitted he "didn't have a clue" about the difficult question.

Beat The Chasers fans took to social media to share their thoughts, with many insisting the question was unfair and Ray had been put at a disadvantage.

"That was a s*** first question, they should invite him back next series #beatthechasers," one person wrote on X. A second said: "#beatthechasers What a b****y ridiculous first question."

A third fan of the ITV show added: "That was an awful first question. I don’t understand why they broadcast the people that get the first question wrong and can’t play on. If that were me I definitely wouldn’t want to be on tv! #BeatTheChasers," and another said: "Getting that as 1st Question seemed a bit harsh #beatthechasers."

Elsewhere on the show, contestants walked away with some huge cash prizes, including £50,000 and £30,000. The first contestant on the episode, Daniel, walked away with £30k after beating the Chasers perfectly, despite being given a time of less than 40 seconds.

The Chase star Mark Labbett, known as The Beast, even took to social media to point out the huge win. He wrote on X: "I think that is only the second time the chasers have been beaten despite playing perfectly. A time offer of less than 40 seconds is huge! #beatthechasers."

Other viewers went wild over the win, with one person writing: "Played that absolutely perfect! Congrats," while a second said: "Well done Daniel! What a great performance, and so close too! Enjoy your winnings!"

The Chase is broadcast on weekdays at 5pm on ITV and can be streamed on ITVX
