ITV Coronation Street confirms legend's return - and 'another icon is joining them'
Coronation Street has confirmed the return of a soap legend - and another icon could be following suit
Telly favourite Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) first set foot on the cobbles back in 2000. As the matriarch of the Grimshaw clan, Eileen has become a hit with fans over the years.
Earlier this year though, Eileen bid farewell to Weatherfield to head off to Thailand. Her exit came following her son Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas) breaking his back in a moped accident.
Eileen’s exit seemed to coincide with Sue’s new role away from the soap. Earlier this year, she starred in Sister Act: The Musical, which toured all around the UK. Sue has also become a panellist on ITV’s Loose Women.

However, during Wednesday’s episode (September 18) the soap issued an update on Eileen and Jason. Eileen’s partner George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) told Todd (Gareth Pierce) that Jason had recovered earlier than planned and Eileen was coming back.
Fans were delighted at the news of Eileen’s comeback, and with Jason now recovered, could he also be making a return? Some viewers think so, with one writing on social media: “Jason mention! Hope he comes back with his mum.” A second wrote: “It’s been so long!” At the time of her exit this year, Sue appeared on Lorraine where she spoke about the role and whether it meant she was leaving Corrie.
Asked if she would be back on the soap soon, Sue revealed: "Yes absolutely. I have a few months grace to do this job and then I will be back in there as soon as I finish." It wasn’t the first time Eileen had been written out of the show. In 2022, Sue took some time out to star in I'm A Celebrity.
Meanwhile, Jason Grimshaw actor Ryan Thomas was last seen on the soap back in 2016. He first joined in 2000 and became a soap favourite, famous for his dramatic relationships and romances.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
