Coronation Street fans are buzzing with rumours as they wonder if notorious character Les Battersby, portrayed by Bruce Jones, might be about to make a comeback.

The artful dodgy dealer first graced our screens on the ITV soap back in 1997 alongside his wife Janice (played by Vicky Entwistle), their daughter Leanne (starred by Jane Danson) and stepdaughter Toyah (brought to life by Georgia Taylor).

Les became infamous for his cunning tricks and trademark humour. Post his explosive split from wife Janice, who fell head-over-heels for Dennie Stringer, Les discovered love anew with Chesney and Fiz's mother, Cilla Brown reports OK!

However, in 2007 lead actor Bruce was suspended from the series following his revelation of upcoming plots to an undercover journalist along with making offensive remarks about the TV programme. Even though he was a crucial part of the show at that time, it was later decided Bruce won't return to the series.

On the storyline, Les Battersby was last sighted in the Street Cars office episode of May 2007. Since then there have been references made to him suggesting he has relocated to Dublin on account of his work with an Irish tribute band.

A year since he took his leave, Chesney received mail from him which indicated Les had dropped 'Brown' from his surname, implying a divorce from Cilla.

Currently, in the ongoing narrative of the soap, viewers have seen his character's daughter Leanne getting trapped into a high-stakes cult plot. Evil mastermind Rowan Cunliffe has enticed Leanne into the unnerving "self-improvement group" The Institute, the Daily Star reports.

Rowan, in a manipulative move, has managed to separate Leanne from her kin and persuaded her into discussing deep-rooted traumas, with him secretly documenting their dialogues. The forthcoming week sees Leanne returning from an Institute retreat, still rejecting any negative remarks her sister Toyah dishes out about Rowan.

This situation may call upon a bolder family member to reappear and intervene. Excited fans are now wagering Les might come back to "sort Rowan out." One Coronation Street enthusiast mused on a Facebook fan page: "Les Battersby is coming back in the leanne storyline."

Viewpoints among the spectators varied widely. One pumped-up viewer gushed: "This would be amazing! He could help Leanne and get rid of Rowan." A second voice chimed in, "I liked Les...he acted the part well .... that's why many ppl not liked him."

A third fan agreed, adding, "I thought this especially with Leanne and Toyah's storyline." However, not everyone shared the enthusiasm. A disappointed watcher posted: "Oh no! ! ! I really hope not."

Yet another soap fanatic admitted: "Hope not can't stand the character unless it's in flashbacks." Another expressed outright rejection: "Noooooooooo."

Coronation Street is shown on ITV1 at 8pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
