Coronation Street fans are in for a shock next week as one of the show's most beloved characters is rushed to hospital following an attack.

Roy Cropper, who has been struggling to adjust to life after his prison ordeal, is seen leaving the cafe to deliver homemade soup to Shona Platt when he is accosted by a group of thugs who hurl insults at him, causing him to fall. Carla Connor rushes to help him, but it's clear he's in pain.

Later on the ITV soap, when Shona confesses that she wasn't really sick and had only pretended to be ill to lure him back to the cafe, Roy sends her and Evelyn Plummer away.

Just moments later, while Shona is outside explaining the situation to Nina Lucas, an ambulance pulls up and they rush to the cafe where Roy is receiving CPR.

At the hospital, a mysterious visitor appears at Roy's bedside. As he slips in and out of consciousness, the visitor stays with him before vanishing, reports the Manchester Evening News.
