The drama in Emmerdale continued into Tuesday night's episode which saw a hot-headed Caleb confronting Anthony in a long-awaited showdown involving a gun.

Last night, viewers saw a flash-forward to a scene of Ruby's dad Anthony laying dead on the ground, opening a huge conversation about 'whodunnit'. Tuesday's episode brought audiences back to real time, leading the anticipated viewers up to revealing the truth about Anthony's murderer.

The episode began with Caleb taking Anthony in his car to an old barn. Caleb ordered him to get out the car, but he refused. Caleb's anger continued to grow as he pulled a gun from his pocket insisting Anthony get out of the car.

Caleb would not back down as he pointed the gun and called Anthony a "scumbag." He said: "You know what you did and I want you to admit it." He also warned him: "This is endgame for you, do you understand?"

Elsewhere on the ITV soap, residents of the village are left wondering about Anthony's whereabouts. Steph is confused why her grandfather has failed to meet up with her as planned.

Meanwhile, Nicola and Laurel struggle to deal with their guilty consciences. Last night, Laurel defended Nicola against Anthony, hitting him with a candlestick which left him bleeding.

With viewers still waiting for the Caleb to pull the trigger, Anthony exposed Ruby and Cain's secret affair to Caleb. A flustered Caleb lost concentration, and Anthony managed to tackle him as they both fight for control of the gun.

Outside of the barn, a curious Cain pulled up just in time to hear a gunshot. But the episode ended and viewers were left wondering what exactly went down inside the barn.

Audiences flooded onto X, formally known as Twitter, to express their frustration about the undeniably dramatic cliff-hanger which ended the show. One said: "They can't leave it there!!"

More viewers added: "the scream I just screamt" and "When we had half an hour of Caleb pointing the gun at Anthony and it ends without us knowing who shot who..."

Some fans even attempted to work out who was victim to the gunshot: "What I'm thinking is, maybe Caleb gets shot", "Those last couple of mins were WOW, reckon Caleb got shot." Another said: "I'll be furious if they've killed Caleb."

Emmerdale is on ITV1 at 7.30pm.
