ITV Lorraine Dr Amir Khan's simple tip to avoid getting norovirus
TV doctor Amir Khan is reminding people of a very simple act they can perform to keep norovirus at bay amid a rise in cases. The best-selling author and regular ITV guest, who is also a full-time GP, appeared alongside host Lorraine Kelly on Tuesday, November 5, amid what is being referred to as a "quadruple-demic".
The phrase stems from four viruses that are currently doing the rounds: respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), flu, Covid-19, and norovirus, also known as the "winter vomiting bug". And, as ever when the weather turns colder, many people are catching a common cold, too.
Dr Khan explains that RSV and flu are "often caused by droplets" and are airborne illnesses, and are "particularly dangerous in young babies and older adults". He continued: "Covid, we know about. Big airborne virus, multisystem, causes all sorts of problems."

Moving onto norovirus, he explained that it's "definitely on the rise now", and added: "It's caused by contaminated surfaces or getting too close to people who are infected. You are contagious two days before and two days after your symptoms so you've got to stay off work for two days after your symptoms.
"Main symptoms are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, stomach cramps. The best way to prevent it from spreading? Wash your hands regularly, so simple!"
Dr Khan explained people should use soap and hot water to do so, and not hand sanitiser. You should also clean surfaces and places like the door handles and locks on toilets or bathrooms, with disinfectant.
People with norovirus are also advised not to prepare food for others while infected. Dr Khan went on to say: "People often ask me 'if I've had norovirus once, can I get it again?' Yes, norovirus is a group of viruses, if you've had one version of it you can get another one - so keep washing your hands!"
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV and ITVX
