ITV's The 1% Club contestant wins £99k but was 'overwhelmed' by what happened next

The winner of a whopping £99,000 on an ITV game show couldn't believe his luck, saying it was beyond his wildest dreams.

Twenty-four year old Daniel O'Halloran from Wirral, triumphed over 99 other contenders on The 1% Club, which aired last on ITV in May 2023. Hosted by the hilarious Lee Mack, the quiz challenges contestants with questions on reasoning, logic, and maths.

It was actually Daniel's mum who signed him up for the show as his folks are huge fans. When he headed to Manchester for filming in July 2022, bagging the top prize was the furthest thing from his mind.

Starting with a hundred hopefuls, The 1% Club pits them against each other to reach the final round where they must answer a question only 1% of Brits can solve, all for a chance at the £100,000 jackpot.

Daniel shared: "I was quite confident in getting to the latter stages of the show, but I never in my wildest dreams imagined taking home that much money. I thought if I got to £10,000 with no money to fall back on, I'd take the £10,000 and wouldn't gamble."

Initially, he was leaning towards the safer option of taking £10,000 a decision supported by the audience and his fellow contestants. However, in a bold move, he decided to tackle the £99,000 question, reports the Mirror.

His gamble paid off when his answer was correct, leading him to exclaim in disbelief: "I lost control of my body. I was running around celebrating on stage in total shock. I never thought I'd be standing there on the show, let alone winning it."

Daniel spoke about the intense challenge of keeping his game show win a secret, saying: "It was very difficult, there were some moments I nearly blurted it out or my family would ask me and I couldn't keep the smile on my face. I only told my grandma and a few friends."

He managed to keep the big news from his parents, letting them think he had won just the £10,000 he had earlier secured on the show. The moment they discovered the truth while watching the show was pure joy for Daniel: "When they were watching it, they couldn't believe I'd done it. It was the best thing to see."

Daniel relished in his family's flabbergasted response, sharing: "They were in total shock - they said some things you probably couldn't print in the paper! They couldn't believe I'd kept it secret."

After the show aired, he became a local sensation. "It's been crazy. People in shops and on the streets have been asking me about it. I'm overwhelmed by how kind everyone has been."

He also shared heartfelt recognition of the show and other contestants: "All the other contestants were great and probably got me through it! Lee Mack was lovely too."

Despite the temptation to splurge Daniel is contemplating prudently over how to use these unexpected earnings. "I've got to be sensible, maybe look towards the house or pay off the mortgage. But I've got to enjoy it as well. I can't take this for granted," he affirmed.
