It’s official: after plenty of speculation it’s been confirmed that ITV comedy Benidorm is coming to an end.

The show’s creator, Derren Litten, 47, announced the news via his Twitter account yesterday.

He began: ‘Crazy to think Wednesday will be the last episode of Benidorm!’

‘I created the series over 11 years ago, wrote it, guest starred in it and ended up directing it. It’s difficult to think what else there is to do! Thank you for watching! #MuchasGracias,’ he wrote.

ITV had previously responded cryptically to the rumour that the programme was ending, prompting fans to sweat over the renewal of the show, after a spokesperson said: ‘No decision has been made about a further series.’

A source at The Sun had also offered some worrisome words about the future of the comedy, saying the programme had ‘run its course.’

‘The ratings have started to drop off and a number of the fan favourites have left, so it just feels as though the time is right to let it go out while it’s still on a high,’ they said.

‘It has been ITV’s longest running comedy, which is a real achievement.’

Lidden had responded to the initial talk of the show ended, seemingly quashing any speculation by saying: ‘And apparently The Sun are running a story tomorrow on how #Benidorm has been cancelled, he began.

‘Don’t make me f**king laugh,’ he continued. ‘(I enjoyed that story after series 6. And 7 and 8 and 9…)’

The show has been a popular nightly respite for ITV viewers for over a decade, as the show became the channel’s longest-running comedy show.

It also received critical acclaim when it won Most Popular Comedy Programme in 2008 and 2011 at the National Television Awards.
