ITV's Crime and Punishment series premiered a new documentary special tonight (February 14) as Katie Piper looked into the investigation around model and Geordie Shore extra Aimee Spencer's death.

Aimee, known professionally as Carla Mai, was left hospitalised in July 2016 after she reportedly fell from a window in a Brighton flat, before she later passed away from her injuries a week later.

The Death of Aimee Spencer looks at the entire investigation from start to finish – beginning with the emergency call reporting the incident and ending with the conclusion of the case in January this year.

Using interviews with detectives trying to solve the case, as well as bodycam footage from officers who were at the scene and footage of the key developments, The Death of Aimee Spencer attempted to piece together the background to how she might have ended up dying in such tragic circumstances.

From the beginning of the investigation, officers were questioning how Aimee ended up falling from the two-storey window – including whether or not it was an accident – and with key witness Daniel found in a drug-induced state and unable to give a statement, the pressure was on the officers to gather as much evidence as possible.

But while the investigation continued, Aimee's family were left facing the devastating choice of whether to turn off their daughter's life support machine – and it was the emotional recollections of Aimee's family in the documentary that left viewers heartbroken:

Aimee's cause of death was ultimately attributed to a fall from a great height while under the influence of cocaine and ketamine.

Key witness Daniel Lewis later pleaded guilty to seven counts of possession with intent to supply in October 2018, receiving a two-year suspended sentence at the time, before a court of appeals ruled that Daniel's sentence was "unduly lenient", and sentenced him to three years in prison in January 2019.

And while many viewers watching The Death of Aimee Spencer acknowledged that her death was a tragedy, others couldn't help but feel that the documentary had left a few key things out, leaving them with a lot of questions:

But at least there was praise for presenter Katie Piper, with viewers saying she handled her role in the documentary with sympathy and understanding:

ITV's Crime and Punishment series continues next Thursday (February 21) with Sir Trevor McDonald's previously-pulled Fred and Rose West documentary at 9pm on ITV.
