'I've heard whispers' - Former Everton chief speaks out on Jarrad Branthwaite to Liverpool transfer 'mischief'
Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has dismissed the "mischief" rumours that have seen Jarrad Branthwaite linked with a move to Liverpool. Speculation has swirled in recent days claiming that the Reds could be about to make a move for the centre-back.
Liverpool are yet to make their first signing of the summer transfer window but have been linked with several players, including central defenders. Sepp van den Berg has completed a £25 million move to Brentford, while Joe Gomez has also been heavily linked with a move away from Anfield.
Branthwaite has been the subject of interest from Manchester United this summer. The Blues have rejected two bids for the England international, with the Old Trafford club subsequently signing Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt instead.
Earlier this week, the bookmakers surprisingly listed Liverpool as the new odds-on favourites to sign Branthwaite. However, the ECHO understands that the Reds have not held any talks with Everton over the possibility of signing the 22-year-old before the transfer window closes next Friday.
Addressing the speculation, Wyness, who worked as chief executive at Goodison Park from 2004-09, told Football Insider: “Everton fans will be biting our nails about outgoings and incomings heading into the last week of the window.
“I’m hearing a load of whispers about [Jarrad] Branthwaite joining Liverpool during the week, which I think is more mischief from fans than anything else.
“[Dominic] Calvert-Lewin’s future is also yet to be decided. I think Everton will be busy in the market until the very end.”
