Marvel's Inhumans amped up the hype with a new trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, featuring a royal coup, a giant teleporting dog and – courtesy of Serinda Swan's Medusa – the baddest barnet in the business.

But the latest footage still left us with one big question... what's going on with Iwan Rheon's accent?

The ex-Game of Thrones actor isn't deploying his natural Welsh tones in Inhumans, opting instead for something he describes as a "Moon accent" – since the Inhumans live in a city on Earth's satellite.

"We were discussing before I started, whether I'd do it in a British accent," he told Digital Spy. "But I just thought that might seem odd, because most of the cast are American. So I thought it would be better to make it sound mid-Atlantic.

"I didn't worry about it too much, it wasn't something I let bog me down, but I thought it would make more sense."

In the original comic books, Rheon's character Maximus is known as 'Maximus the Mad' and is very much the villain of the piece. Here though, he's been reinvented as a more "tragic" figure – and the only Inhuman without a special power.

"It's a caste system," he said of Inhuman civilisation, "and your power defines where you sit in that caste system, so by him not having a power, he goes right at the bottom, it's the worst thing possible.

"He's part of the Royal family, but only because he's the King's brother. So that's heartbreaking and difficult for him – in theory, he could've been King himself, but by not being Inhuman, he can never be."

Maximus ends up leading a coup against his brother Black Bolt (Anson Mount)- but again, Rheon insists that the character's motives aren't totally selfish.

"He understands the people at the lower end of the society, he thinks that they're treated horribly and he thinks that the society that they're living in is archaic and that it's time for change. When you listen to what he says, written down on paper, I think you'll probably agree with him."

Maximus, though, comes up against opposition in the form of Medusa, with footage from Comic-Con showing the pair clashing. But they were once childhood friends...

"They were very good friends when they were younger – the bad kids running off together – but then she met his brother and ditched Maximus," Rheon explained. "He was all alone then – everyone looked down on him, everyone picked on him because he didn't have a power, so now he's a loner. It's quite tragic, really!"

Marvel's The Inhumans will premiere its first two episodes on IMAX from September 1, 2017, before the entire season of eight episodes kicks off on ABC from September 2.
