American retailer J Crew, a label known for its preppy style and A-list fan base (including perhaps most famously, former first lady Michelle Obama), is set to shut all of its UK stores. The company has announced the decision to close six stores and its UK headquarters after suffering financial trouble – and has decided instead to service UK customers through its global online platform.

"After a thorough review, we have determined we are best able to serve our UK customers through our global e-commerce platform and are closing our six store locations in the country," a spokesperson for J Crew said, as reported by The Guardian. "We thank our UK associates for their dedication during this unprecedented time and are working to support their transition."

J Crew has been struggling financially for some time but has been pushed over the edge by the Covid-19 pandemic, forcing the retailer to file for bankruptcy in May. It has not yet been announced how many of the brand's 500 stores worldwide will close, but the decision has been taken to close all UK stores.

J Crew began as a catalogue business back in the 1980s and soon became known for its affordable, preppy, Americana-inspired pieces, which were worn often by the likes of Michelle Obama and the Duchess of Sussex.

The label is unfortunately not the first American retailer to leave the UK market after a difficult year in the sector with both Forever 21 and Victoria's Secret putting their UK businesses into administration.
