Note: Contains spoilers for Jack Ryan seasons 1-2.

Jack Ryan is back in business, albeit a little different.

Season two was scheduled to arrive today (November 1), but the Halloween spirit was well and truly alive at Amazon, with all eight episodes released a day early – cue excitement from the JR faithful.

Both John Krasinski and Wendell Pierce have returned as Ryan and James Greer, but Abbie Cornish, who played Cathy Mueller, is nowhere to be seen.

The doctor, who specialised in infectious diseases, was romantically involved with Ryan, but despite surviving the events of season one – she had a close call in a hospital lift in the finale – she doesn't play a role in the latest batch of episodes.

Ryan appears to confirm that their relationship is over when he sleeps with Harriet Baumann (Noomi Rapace).

The decision not to include Mueller hasn't gone down well with some fans.

Cornish has been busy post Jack Ryan season one, starring in Australian mini-series Secret Bridesmaids' Business, as well as working on noir thriller The Virtuoso with Anthony Hopkins and Anson Mount. But if you're hoping Mueller will pop up in season two, you're going to be disappointed – we've searched high and low for an explanation, but there's diddly-squat out there.

Nevertheless, her character wasn't killed off, and with season three already confirmed, the door is open for a Mueller-Ryan reunion.

In the books, the pair get married and have four children, so it's unsurprising that viewers are confused about where she is – perhaps this adaptation of Cathy doesn't appreciate her love interest jetting off to a country on the brink of collapse and has washed her hands of Ryan.

Here's hoping the next chapter gives us some much-needed answers.
