Phil Mitchell has got plenty on his mind currently, what with his recent liver transplant and finding out he's the father of Denise's baby son.

Small wonder he's reluctant to speak at the funeral of his cousins Ronnie and Roxy in Thursday's episode of EastEnders.

In a new preview clip for the episode, Jack Branning tries to persuade Phil to take part - but the head of the Mitchell family isn't budging.

Jack is seen telling Phil: "I need you to say a few words at the funeral, I know it's what Ronnie would have wanted. A few meaningful words would be appreciated."

Immediately, Phil replies: "Sorry, I can't."

"Why not?" Jack asks as Sharon steps in and suggests Phil "just have some time to think about it".

Jay, Michelle, Louise and Denny sit nearby at the table listening quietly to the argument as Phil will only reply: "I said no."

An angry Jack persists: "Why not? They look up to you, you were their favourite cousin!"

But Phil just tells Jack he will be at the funeral "paying [his] respects", as Ben volunteers to speak instead.

A grateful but still angry Jack says: "Nice one Ben, good to know there's a man in the family," before storming out, closely followed by Sharon.

EastEnders airs these scenes on Thursday, January 19 on BBC One at 7.30pm.
