Every year when the Oscar nominations are revealed, talk immediately turns to who should have gotten a nod.

This year has been no exception, with a slew of performances and movies that were unfairly overlooked.

And now Jake Gyllenhaal has weighed into the debate by giving his own personal pick of who should now have "Oscar-nominated" next to their name.

His choice? Ryan Reynolds for his performance in Deadpool, which Jake described as the star's perfect role.

"We talk about brilliant performances all the time, you know, the actors who tear themselves apart for their roles, which I'm a believer in," he said at a recent screening of Nocturnal Animals (via Vulture).

"But then I look at Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool and I say, 'No one can do that but him.' That is truly, purely him. As an artist, he struggled for several years to figure that out, and it's all there on the screen. And it's brilliant."

He also suggested that Reynolds was overlooked because the Academy tends to snub comic book movies.

"Sure, it's a comic-book movie and it's made a lot of money - but that doesn't subtract from Ryan's extraordinary work," Gyllenhaal continued.

"Because it's him. I mean, let's ask ourselves: What else do we want from people who create? Something that is truly them."

To be fair, Reynolds himself responded to the snub in the most Deadpool-esque way, writing on Twitter: "Regularly scheduled tickle-fight at Camp #Deadpool is still on. Congrats to all the nominees for these brilliant films."
