On Saturday night, Jake Gyllenhaal surprised audiences when he stopped by a taping of American Public Media's Live From Here with Chris Thile. Finding time between showings of his Broadway play Sea Wall/A Life, he joined the program to deliver one of his play's famous monologues alongside a musical performance by Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig.

Live From Here was previously called Prairie Home Companion, but recently rebranded with a new host - catering to millennials who once made fun of their parents for listening to APR while they were growing up.

It's not only millennials in the audience; it's a true mix of folks who grew up with Prairie Home Companion as well as younger music fans hoping for an intimate performance.

The weekly show is hosted by mandolin player and Punch Brothers member Chris Thile, with a little help from Grammy Award-winning singer Sarah Jarosz.

Gyllenhaal is currently starring in Sea Wall/A Life alongside actor Tom Sturridge and the tragicomedy is said to dissect the meaning of life and love through monologues about masculinity. The Broadway play has reportedly turned into a "Justin Bieber" concert because Gyllenhaal's teen fans are so excited to see the Spider-Man star onstage. Fans are said to line up directly at the stage to catch Gyllenhaal in action and photograph him before the show starts, much to the chagrin of other show-goers.

The actor wasn't the only celebrity to take the stage during the variety show's season premiere. Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig performed a few songs from his band's Father of the Bride album, starting the night out with Harmony Hall.

For an impromptu encore, Koenig played Obvious Bicycle from the 2013 album Modern Vampires of the City. Unfortunately, Oxford Comma probably wouldn't have been appropriate for public radio...although it certainly would have appealed to listeners who must all have strong feelings about the controversial grammar rule.

Koenig's small set, split up into songs throughout the show, was much more intimate than the previous night's sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden. His appearance was met with almost Bieber level squeals, as well as people lining up outside the historic venue post-show to meet him.

Koenig recently welcomed a child with his partner, Parks & Recreation actress Rashida Jones.

Latin Grammy nominee Natalia Lafourcade also performed, as well as comedian Matt Braunger and podcast creator Holly Laurent. Upcoming shows will have performances by The Lumineers, Raphael Saadiq, Wynton Marsalis, Trey Anastasio and Grace Potter.

If you can't make it to the historic Town Hall theatre in New York to watch, they offer a livestream that's more than worth tuning into - and not just because Jake Gyllenhaal could appear at any moment. But don't worry - there aren't any teens lining up at the stage for a glimpse of the actor. Outside the venue, however, is a different story.
