What Jake Paul needs to become ranked boxer after 'dangerous' Mike Tyson fight

The president of the World Boxing Council has outlined what Jake Paul needs to do in order to become a ranked boxer following his 'dangerous' fight with Mike Tyson.

Youtuber turned fighter Jake Paul faces former world heavyweight champion 'Iron Mike' Tyson in Texas this week in a much talked about fight. However, the event, while attracting plenty of attention, has not been without criticism.

Paul has already received himself since he chose to step into the ring for the first time, from accusations he's isn't a serious contender to the quality of his opponents.

As footage from a three-part Netflix docuseries made in lead up to the event shows, Paul is focused to prove them wrong and wants to become a champion in his own right.

Now, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has had his say on Paul's next steps to becoming a ranked boxer, as he admits that the online personality is getting closer.

This comes as his next fight will be against now 58-year-old Mike Tyson , although Paul faces a complicated process.

Speaking to OBLG, Sulaiman said: "He’s (Paul) getting there. I believe he is 10-1 and in his last fight he looked dominant, but he needs to increase the level of competition and stay active. I believe he is ready to be entered in the rankings of the cruiserweight division.

"He is a real fighter but there is one more test to take place and it’s a ratings committee that determines the rankings. It is not me or a small group, it is a big group from all over the world and they have a ratings criteria.

"What I see is, Jake Paul is on the way to entering the big leagues in boxing."

The fight has been labelled 'dangerous' for both fighters

Suliaiman has also labelled the fight as 'dangerous' for both contenders, with some corners raising concern over Tyson's age and previous medical concerns which caused the fight to be delayed from its original date.

He added: "Every fight is dangerous regardless of age, regardless of anything, one punch can change your life. We do our best effort at the WBC to minimise the risks for all fighters for when they go into the ring.

"We have changed the sport in the last 60 years with so many medicals, precaution weigh-ins, the 15 to 12 rounds, the weigh-in the day before and the gloves and ring.

"There are so many things we have introduced that have been successful, so everything is for their health and the benefit of the fighters. Any fight at any level is a concern."

Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson is streaming live on Netflix from approx. 1am GMT, November 16.
